Cluj-Napoca is situated in the heart of Transylvania, and is considered by Romanians to be the region’s unofficial capital. As a former European Youth Capital and home to many large universities, Cluj has become an important destination for travelers. As a former Roman city, Cluj has a wealth of history behind it. Many visitors stop in the city’s Old Town to view the striking statue of Matthias Corvinus, the founder of the Black Army and King of Hungary, of which Transylvania used to be a part. Corvinus’ statue stands in front of the gothic St. Michael's Church, which is also visually stunning. While there, explore some of the other cultural attractions at the Piata Unirii, such as the Cluj National Museum of Art or the Pharmacy History Collection. From Cluj’s Old Town, walk along the Somesul Mic River to arrive at the wooded Simion Barnutiu Central Park, and get a bite at the restaurants that sit in the middle of its lake.
As the home to a dozen universities, Cluj has a spirited nightlife. Many hip bars and restaurants take up residence in the medieval and baroque storefronts lining the city’s Old Town. Since these establishments are catering to a younger, student crowd, expect lower prices and a festive atmosphere.
Many malls are situated on the outskirts of the city proper and offer retail shops ranging from fashion to electronics. Artisan goods and crafts can be found in shops throughout the Old Town. Also, do some scouring in the back alleys and side streets for specialty bookshops and art galleries to find truly unique and valuable items.
